Affordable Housing SolutionsThe state of Oregon, and frankly much of the nation, is experiencing a housing affordability crisis. Both rural and urban communities are experiencing rapidly escalating rental and ownership prices and extremely scarce resources to address the problem. Some communities are organizing to meet the demand, such as Eugene and Hood River here in Oregon. Other communities are striving to get organized, but due to a lack of resources and capacity, are struggling. To add to the challenge, both Federal and State resources have diminished in the past few years, leaving few options. It is critical that communities identify the best ways to best deploy state and federal resources and identify and implement local tools to solve the problem.

The Process |
There are many strategies and tools available to tackle this challenge. Some cost money, others don’t. Some are a big political lift, while others are small tweaks that can make a big difference. Through a series of interviews and meetings with jurisdictional staff, elected officials and concerned citizens and partners we arrive at community driven solutions. These solutions are then expanded upon for ease of implementation.
This process will build support for, and understanding of, affordable housing, the critical role that affordable housing and providers play within communities, and local strategies to support the development and ownership of affordable housing. We also review a long list of strategies and discuss the pros and cons of each, to help determine which to deploy in your particular community. |
The Results |
At the end of this process you will have a short list of viable options to deploy in your community to create more affordable housing, along with implementation examples and templates to help get you started right away.
